What is Aloha?

What is Aloha?

Aloha carries no single translation, yet its essence is deeply woven into the fabric of Hawaiian culture. Queen Lili‘uokalani, after the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, offered this profound reflection:

I could not turn back the time for the political change, but there is still time to save our heritage. You must remember never to cease to act because you fear you may fail. The way to lose any earthly kingdom is to be inflexible, intolerant, and prejudicial. Another way is to be too flexible, tolerant of too many wrongs, and without judgment at all. It is a razor’s edge. It is the width of a blade of pili grass. To gain the kingdom of heaven is to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen, and to know the unknowable – that is Aloha. All things in this world are two: in heaven there is but One.

At its core, Aloha is more than just a word—it is a way of being, a philosophy of connection, respect, and balance. It embodies values that guide harmonious relationships with oneself, others, and the natural world:

  • AAkahai (Kindness), expressed with tenderness.
  • LLōkahi (Unity), expressed with harmony.
  • O‘Olu‘olu (Agreeability & Truthfulness), expressed with pleasantness.
  • HHa‘aha‘a (Humility), expressed with modesty.
  • AAhonui (Patience), expressed with perseverance.

Why Aloha?

In a world increasingly disconnected from nature and one another, Aloha offers a path back to balance—a way of living in harmony with the Earth and all life.

Embodying the Values and Practices of Aloha leads to deeper relationships, both within ourselves and with the intricate web of life that sustains us. It is a force that nurtures abundance, belonging, and mindfulness.

Yet, Aloha is often absent from global markets and industries, which thrive on competition, disconnection, and inequity. This absence fuels environmental degradation, social disparities, and the destabilization of ecosystems that sustain life on our planet.

To restore balance, humanity must shift towards mindful consumption, regenerative practices, and a deeper appreciation of all resources—natural, human, and cultural. From breathable air to thriving ecosystems, from human happiness to interwoven relationships, every aspect of life is enriched when guided by the principles of Aloha.

Through continuous understanding and practice, Aloha connects us—not only to the world around us but to all things.
